Cataract Surgery Q&A

What are cataracts?

A cataract is a clouding of the lens portion of your eye. Cataracts develop slowly and usually don’t interfere with vision in the early stages. Eventually, many people with cataracts find their vision blurred, as though they are looking through a frosted or fogged window.

Cataracts develop when proteins and fibers within your eye lens begin to break down. Your lens is usually clear and serves to focus light as it enters the eye, directing it to your retina.

Initially thin and flexible, your lens can thicken and become more rigid over time. When clouding develops, it blocks and scatters the light as it enters your eye, blurring your vision.

Am I at risk of developing cataracts?

Anyone can develop cataracts, but there are known risk factors that increase your chances of experiencing this specific eye health condition. If any of the following apply, you may be at risk of developing cataracts:

  • Advanced age
  • Smoking
  • Weight challenges
  • High blood pressure
  • Excessive exposure to sunlight
  • High consumption of alcohol
  • Long term corticosteroid use
  • Diabetes
  • Previous eye surgery

Routine eye exams can identify cataracts in the developing stage. You can reduce your risk of cataracts by wearing sunglasses outside, eating a healthy and varied diet, and managing chronic health conditions.

How does cataract surgery improve vision?

Once your lens becomes clouded, the only way to improve your vision is through cataract surgery. The procedure involves removing the clouded lens and replacing it with an artificial one.

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure, so you’ll be able to return home afterward. The entire process usually takes less than an hour. Prior to surgery, Dr. Choi performs a painless ultrasound test to learn the exact specifications of your eye, which determines the type of artificial lens implant best suited for your needs.

Renew Eye Clinic offers femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery, an approach that boasts unparalleled accuracy. A precisely controlled laser creates a clean cut, which enhances healing. A flap in the lens capsule allows Dr. Choi to remove the clouded lens and position the artificial one.

In cases where the femtosecond laser is not the right approach, Dr. Choi performs a more traditional procedure using a keratome and capsulotomy needle. During your initial consultation you’ll learn which options are right for you.
